U17 Match Report Monday 14th April 2008

SBYFL League Cup

Result: St Mary's FC 1 Bangor Swifts 1

2 - 1 After Extra Time

St Mary's started this game as favourites on basis of each teams' league performances throughout the year but Bangor Swifts fought hard to pull off a shock.

John Meighan created a good chance for Ryan McAuley early on which just flashed wide whilst another effort from Kevin Meighan went over. Bar this the first half ended 0 - 0 with no real clear cut chances.

Second half saw St Mary's step up and a fierce Rooney free kick saw Conor Saunders nip in to slot in the loose ball and gain the lead. This was the start of St Mary's taking complete control with High Campbell putting in a man of the match performance in the middle of the park. Twice Hugh made strong runs into the Bangor area but his shots were bravely blocked whilst another Kevin Meighan chance went over the bar.

Just as it looked St Mary's would settle for a 1 - 0 win a brief lapse of concentration allowed Bangor to equalise from a corner with the very last kick of normal time. So into extra time the game went with Bangor Swifts having gained a boost of confidence.

However, St Mary's regained control and in the first period of extra time a McAuley through ball allowed Michael O'Reilly the chance to run on and chip the outcoming goalkeeper. This time St Mary's maintained their concentration and held on to secure a quarter final tie against Albion Star.
